Project Sketchbook 2012

Hey there, blog... Yeah, I know it's been a while. I want you to know that while I love you to death, I have to get this thing off my chest. The reason I haven't been updating you is because I've been hanging out with that hussy of a viral networking blog. I feel bad about the neglect, but to make amends, I will post the entirety of my Project Sketchbook 2012 entry here while simply tossing that OTHER blog a link. There, there, now...

Okay, creepy blog dialogue aside, I'm super excited (if not moderately stressed) about the opening night of Project Sketchbook 2012. It will be this Friday, March 2nd, at the Powerhouse (near South Main and G.E. Patterson) from 12-9pm. The event will be neighboring Live from Memphis' Music Video Showcase which is also this weekend. The night promises to be fun as always, and I'm looking forward to having the participants come down and check out what their brothers and sisters in arts have been up to.

Take care, I'll hopefully see you this weekend, and I'll try to update this thing more often, eh? ;)

Even More Monsters

These were a bit overdue, but I finally got around to them.

Momentum Exhibition

A couple of weeks ago, I was invited to submit work into a show that was being coordinated by CODA, an arts organization from Rhodes College. It was unexpected and definitely an eleventh hour call. The invitation came two days prior to the opening, and I was at a lack of stuff that was ready for exhibition. It was suggested that I perform a live drawing during the show, which was fine but that meant coming up with a idea and making it fit in an undefined space.

Yeah...

I quickly made some sketches out, confirmed how much wall space I had, and prepared for two intense hours of speed drawing. Here are the photos.

If you were interested in seeing this process in motion, my friend Elisha recorded this nifty video of the drawing as it progressed throughout the evening.

More gallery updates to come :)

After Some Suggestions...

I think I'm going to leave this one alone for a bit...

AutoZone and ArtsMemphis...

...are two entities that have interesting capitalization. They are also center stage in this fun little drawing I made this morning. I feel like I have to emphasize MORNING because I woke up at 6:30, which is something I haven't done since I worked for a moving company. By the time I got to the AutoZone HQ downtown, the chill of February had worked its magic better than any expresso shot could have. When I checked in, I was listed as a "performer" working with ArtsMemphis which, after good half-hour, felt like a bit of a misnomer. Granted, I was technically performing, furiously doodling away at my easel- however, context makes a big difference. In the sleek downtown entrance lobby, I exuded the kind of electricity that one enjoys from watching a badminton match on ESPN5. That said, it was still fun to draw and I thank ArtsMemphis for the gig and AutoZone for letting me slap ink around in their front door.

Monster of Ceremonies

These are two pieces that will be included in the "Sivads of March" group show at Adam Shaw's studio on Broad Street. It's a tribute to Watson Davis aka Sivad, the host of "Fantastic Features", a weekly program of horror movies that aired during the 60s and 70s on WHBQ-TV. These were a lot of fun to do and I'm excited to see what other people have done for the exhibition. The opening will be Friday, March 26, so you'll have time to make the appropriate arrangements.

Another Round of Sketchcards.

These are the latest drawings from my travel/anti-mooch/overall well-being fundraising endeavor.

I'm finishing this up soon so I can actually prepare for my trip to Chicago next week.

Travel Fundraiser!

Whenever the opportunity arises, I love to travel. Unfortunately, the funds for doing so aren't always there, due to everyday expenses, monthly expenses, and pretty much expenses in general. This is where you come in.
Here's the deal:
I have these nifty 5.5"x7.5" blank sketchcards.

I'll draw ANYTHING YOU WANT on one. And you can totally keep it for $10. Ten U.S. dollars. Very good deal for original art from, well... anybody. Just email me your request to me@derrickdent.com, and click on the image below to send your payment through Paypal (it'll be a secure transaction, I swear!). Once I get confirmation of your payment with your request, I will toil away on your drawing. If you're in the Memphis area, you can meet up with me Saturday (the 14th) @ Otherlands at about 6ish to pick up your drawing, or if you're from Not Memphis, let me know about having it shipped to you. We'll work something out.

Thanks,
Derrick
